Scientists from the Institute of Polymer Chemistry and Physics have created a biosoluble drug film against viral eye diseases
Born and raised in the Shahrisabz district of Kashkadarya, Akobirkhon Shukurov is today recognized as one of the rising leaders of modern Uzbek science. He earned his master’s degree in 2016 and completed his PhD in technical sciences in 2021. Since the very beginning of his career, Shukurov has been working at the Institute of Chemistry and Physics of Polymers under the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, where he has been conducting research for over a decade.
His main focus lies in the development of polymer-based pharmaceuticals. Among his most remarkable achievements is the creation of a unique biodegradable film called GlazAvir, designed for the treatment of viral eye diseases.
This ultra-thin yet highly effective film gradually dissolves after being applied to the eye, directly delivering the medicine to the infected area. As a result, the treatment efficiency increases severalfold. GlazAvir not only has antiviral properties but also helps reduce inflammation and strengthen the immune response.
Preclinical tests have confirmed its effectiveness: animals treated with GlazAvir recovered faster, with disease symptoms disappearing more quickly and overall tissue healing and lifespan showing notable improvement compared to conventional therapies.
However, Uzbekistan currently lacks a pharmaceutical company capable of producing drugs in such a film form. Because of this, the launch of clinical trials and large-scale production has been delayed.
Despite these challenges, Shukurov has published more than 40 scientific articles, including papers in international journals. Today, he works as a senior researcher at the “Chemistry and Technology of Cellulose and Its Derivatives” laboratory, where he not only continues his studies but also mentors young scientists.
Thanks to his dedication, perseverance, and passion for science, Akobirkhon Shukurov has earned respect as one of the institute’s most esteemed specialists. His invention, GlazAvir, is poised to become a groundbreaking contribution not only to Uzbek science but also to the global field of ophthalmology.
